Java

Java appears in game work mostly on the server side, in backend services, tooling and Android-adjacent development.

In games, Java is a backend and tooling language rather than a client one. It shows up in game services such as accounts, matchmaking, inventories and leaderboards, in internal tools and build infrastructure, and in data and integration services around a live title. Some long-running titles and Android codebases also carry Java directly.

Postings naming it usually ask for the ecosystem around it: a JVM framework, relational databases and SQL, containers, CI/CD and a cloud platform, plus testing discipline, because a service that breaks takes players offline rather than crashing one machine.

Compared with C++ and C#, which dominate engine and gameplay code, Java marks the server and platform half of a studio's engineering. Roles that list it are typically backend, platform or tools positions, and the game-specific knowledge they need is about load patterns and live operation rather than rendering.

Where these positions are: Barcelona (4 positions), Stockholm (2 positions), Berlin (1 position), Cambridge (1 position), Dublin (1 position), Helsinki (1 position), Katowice (1 position), St. Julian’s (1 position)
