Development Director

Development directors run how a game gets made: planning, staffing, budget and the delivery of a production.

A development director is accountable for the execution of a project rather than its creative content. The work covers roadmaps and milestones, staffing and budget, dependency and risk management across disciplines, external partners and outsourcing, and the reporting that lets leadership see where a production stands.

Postings expect shipped titles, because the credibility of the role rests on having carried a game through certification and launch, and they expect comfort with live-service schedules, where development continues after release and the plan has to absorb events and updates.

A producer usually drives the day-to-day of a team or feature; a studio head answers for the business as a whole. Development direction sits between them: it owns the production system of one project or a group of them, and it is the role that decides what gets cut when scope and date no longer fit together.
