Backend Development
Backend development in games covers the services behind a title: accounts, saves, matchmaking, inventories and events.
The skill means designing and running APIs and services that a game client talks to: authentication and accounts, persistence and saves, matchmaking and sessions, inventories and purchases, leaderboards, and the configuration that drives live events. Scale and latency are the defining constraints, since a launch spike arrives all at once and a slow endpoint is felt as a stutter in the game.
Postings name a language such as Go, C#, Java, Python or C++, relational and key-value stores, a cloud platform, containers, and monitoring. Operational maturity is part of it: on-call, rollbacks and migrations that do not interrupt play.
It stands opposite client and gameplay programming, which runs on the player's device, and next to platform engineering, which provides the shared foundation these services are built on. Live titles are where the two meet most often.
