Tools Programmer
Tools programmers build what the rest of the studio works with: editors, importers, build systems and the automation around them.
Every studio runs on software nobody outside it will ever see. An artist needs an exporter that does not lose pivots, a designer needs an editor that makes a data table safe to change, and production needs a build that assembles itself overnight. Tools programming is the discipline that writes all of it.
The work runs from editor extensions inside the engine through asset pipelines and validation to the build and deployment automation, usually in C++ and C# with Python or TypeScript around the edges.
The measure of the job is other people's time. A tool that saves ten minutes per artist per day is worth more than a clever system nobody uses, which is why the role is as much about talking to users as about writing code. It sits next to build and DevOps engineering, which owns the infrastructure the tools run on.
