Platform Engineer

Platform engineers build and run the shared services and infrastructure that game teams develop and operate on.

A platform engineer in games works one layer below the game: identity and accounts, matchmaking and session services, build and deployment infrastructure, observability, and the internal tooling other engineers use every day. The measure of the work is whether a game team can ship without waiting for anyone.

Postings ask for a cloud provider, containers and orchestration, infrastructure as code, CI/CD and strong operational habits, because an outage here takes players offline rather than slowing one desk down.

A backend developer usually owns features inside one title, and a DevOps engineer is defined by the delivery pipeline. Platform engineering treats the shared foundation as a product with internal customers, and that distinction shows in the job: roadmaps, interfaces and documentation matter as much as the code.
