Level Designer

Level designers lay out the spaces a game is played in and tune how they read, how they flow and how hard they are.

A level designer builds the playable space: the layout of an area, the route a player takes through it, the placement of encounters, cover, pickups and the signposting that makes all of it readable. The work starts in blockout, where only volumes and distances exist, and ends after many rounds of playtesting, where pacing and difficulty are adjusted against what players actually do rather than what the plan assumed.

Most of the job happens inside an editor. Postings ask for scripting of events and triggers, visual scripting such as Blueprints, world building across connected areas, and enough technical care to keep an area inside its performance budget.

The neighbouring roles split along two lines. A level artist dresses and lights the space the level designer has laid out; a game designer owns the rules and systems the space is built around. Level design sits between them and answers for the experience of moving through the world.
