Technical Lead
Technical leads carry the architecture of a codebase and the people who write in it: design decisions, review and the technical direction of a team.
A technical lead is a senior engineer with responsibility for a system and a team. The work is architecture and the decisions behind it, code review, breaking features into tasks that others can take, and keeping an eye on what the codebase will cost in a year.
Most of the role is spent in conversation: with product about what is feasible, with other leads about interfaces between systems, and with the engineers in the team about how they are getting on. Hands-on coding stays part of it, but it is no longer the main measure.
Next to an engineering manager, who owns people and process, the technical lead owns the technical outcome. Next to a principal engineer, who works across teams, the scope is one team and one area of the codebase.
