Network Programming
Making a game work across a connection: replication, prediction, lag compensation and the bandwidth budget they all share.
Network programming is where a game's rules meet physics it cannot change. Packets arrive late, out of order or not at all, so the client predicts, the server corrects, and the code decides how a player experiences the difference. Postings name replication and state synchronisation, client-side prediction and reconciliation, interpolation and rollback, authoritative servers and the anti-cheat thinking that follows from them.
C++ is the common language, Unreal Engine's replication model a frequent requirement, and profiling tools matter as much as the protocol knowledge - bandwidth per player per second is a budget like any other. Briefs often add platform certification requirements for console multiplayer.
Multiplayer Backend covers the services around a session; Gameplay Programming covers the rules themselves. This skill is about making those rules hold when two players disagree about what just happened.
