2D Art

2D art in games covers everything drawn flat: interface elements, icons, illustrations, backgrounds, store art and the concept work that comes before a 3D asset exists.

The skill shows up across very different jobs. Interface artists produce icons, frames and screens that stay legible at small sizes and in several languages. Illustrators draw key art and store assets. Concept artists work out how something looks before anyone models it, and 2D-only productions use the skill for the entire visual output.

Photoshop and Illustrator are the usual tools, often alongside Figma for interface work and procedural or generative tools in the early exploration phase. What a studio tests for is rarely software knowledge: composition, colour, readability at the real display size and the ability to hold a style across a set of assets carry the judgement.

Concept Art is the exploratory end of the same craft, aimed at deciding a design. Pixel Art is a specific technique with its own constraints. 2D Art is the broader skill both sit inside.
