Concept Artist

Concept artists draw what a game will contain before it is built: characters, creatures, props, vehicles and environments.

A concept artist produces the visual answer to a design brief. That means silhouettes and thumbnails first, then refined paintings, callouts and orthographic views that a modeller can work from. Research matters as much as rendering: a believable vehicle, weapon or costume rests on how real examples are built, which is why postings ask for anatomy, perspective and material understanding alongside a portfolio.

Tools are mostly Photoshop and increasingly 3D blockouts in Blender or Maya, used to set proportion and lighting before painting over them.

The role differs from character art and environment art, which take a concept into a finished asset. Concept art happens earlier, is deliberately cheap to throw away, and exists to settle questions of look and direction while changing them still costs a drawing rather than a production pipeline.
