Programming

Programming is the broadest requirement in game development, from gameplay systems and tools to backend services and engine code.

Most programming roles in games are built on C++ and C#, with Python and shell scripting for tooling around them. Which one matters depends on the layer: engine and gameplay code in C++, Unity work and many tools in C#, pipelines and data processing in Python.

The hard part is rarely the language. Game code runs under a frame budget, shares memory with art assets, has to survive designers changing their minds, and is debugged in a build that nobody can reproduce on demand. Profiling, debugging and a sense for data layout count as much as syntax.

Job titles split the field by what the code touches: gameplay, engine, tools, online, graphics. The vocabulary overlaps, so the honest signal in an advert is which systems are named, not the seniority in the title.
