Sound Designer
Sound designers create a game's audio and wire it into the engine so that it reacts to what the player does.
Game audio is interactive audio. A footstep changes with the surface, a weapon sounds different at distance, and music has to move between states without a seam. The sound designer records or builds the material, edits it, and then implements it with middleware such as Wwise or FMOD, where parameters, states and mixing rules decide how it behaves at runtime.
That implementation work is what separates the discipline from linear sound design for film. Voice, music and effects also compete for the same mix, so a large part of the craft is deciding what the player must hear at any moment.
Larger teams split the field into sound design, technical sound design and audio programming; in smaller ones, one person covers recording, implementation and the final mix.
