Lead Game Designer
Lead game designers own the design of a title and the team that writes it: systems, direction, review and the decisions that stick.
The lead sets the design direction of a game and keeps it coherent while a dozen people pull at it. That means owning the core systems, deciding how a feature fits the whole, reviewing the work of the designers on the team, and saying no often enough that the game stays one game.
Half the job is written and spoken: design documents others can build from, arguments for a direction in front of production and leadership, feedback that a designer can act on. The other half stays hands-on, in the engine and in playtests.
Where a game director owns the vision for the whole product including art and tone, the lead designer owns the mechanics and the design team. Where a senior designer owns systems, the lead also owns the people.
