Story Writing

Story writing in games covers the material underneath the script: premise, world, characters, the arc of events and the background that never gets said out loud.

This is the structural end of game writing. It establishes who the characters are and what they want, what the world's rules and history are, and in what order things happen, so that everything written later has something consistent to stand on. Much of the output is reference material for the team rather than text a player ever reads.

Games add a complication that prose does not have: the audience acts, and the order of events is only partly under the writer's control. Structuring a story so that it still means something when a player skips, delays or refuses part of it is the skill that separates this from writing for a linear medium.

Dialogue Writing produces what characters say. Narrative Design decides how the story reaches the player through the game's systems. Story writing supplies the substance both work from.
