Scriptwriter

A scriptwriter writes what characters say and what scenes contain: dialogue, barks, cinematics and the lines that have to carry information while sounding like speech.

Writing for games differs from writing for film in one respect that shapes everything: the audience acts. Lines branch, repeat, trigger out of order and sometimes never play at all. A scriptwriter therefore writes in variants and has to know how many times a player will hear a line before it starts to grate.

The craft parts are the same as anywhere. Each character needs a voice distinct enough that a reader can tell who is speaking without a name tag, and exposition has to arrive without stopping the scene. Scripts are written for performance, so they are also written to be recorded, with pronunciation and timing in mind.

A Narrative Designer shapes how story and systems fit together. The scriptwriter produces the text itself, and is judged on whether it sounds like a person.
