Narrative Designer

A narrative designer builds the story into the game: how it is delivered, where it meets the systems, and what happens to it when the player does something unplanned.

The role is the point where writing and design meet. It decides whether a piece of story arrives as a cutscene, a conversation, an environmental detail or a line triggered during play, and it structures branching so that choices matter without the content multiplying beyond what a team can build.

That makes it partly a systems job. Quest structure, flags, dialogue conditions and the scripting that drives them are daily work, often in the engine itself. The hard constraint is combinatorics: every branch is content someone has to write, record and test, so the craft lies in getting variety from few branches.

A Scriptwriter produces the lines. A Game Designer owns the mechanics. The narrative designer makes the two serve the same story.
