Creative Director

A creative director owns the creative vision of a product and holds everyone's work to it, deciding what the thing is about and which ideas serve that and which do not.

The role is a judgement role. It sets the creative intent of a game, a brand or a campaign, communicates it so that others can work from it, and then reviews what comes back. Most of the week is spent looking at other people's work and explaining why something lands or misses, which only helps if the explanation is specific enough to act on.

It carries responsibility for consistency across disciplines, so the same intent has to survive art, writing, audio and marketing. That makes the ability to argue a case, and to let go of a favourite idea, more important than personal craft output.

An Art Director owns how the game looks. A Game Director owns the project as a whole, including production reality. A creative director owns the idea and answers for it when the result is judged.
