3ds Max

3ds Max is a modelling, animation and rendering package used for game assets, hard-surface work and environment kits.

In game production 3ds Max is used to model and unwrap assets, build modular kits, bake maps and prepare meshes for an engine. Its modifier stack and editable-poly workflow suit hard-surface work such as vehicles, weapons, props and architecture, and its rigging and animation tools cover character and mechanical motion where a pipeline is built around it.

Postings naming 3ds Max usually expect it alongside something else: Substance Painter or Designer for texturing, ZBrush for sculpting, and a game engine for integration. Export discipline is part of the skill, since scale, pivots, naming and smoothing groups decide whether an asset drops into a scene cleanly.

Studios tend to standardise on either 3ds Max or Maya, so the tool often says more about the pipeline than about the role. Being fluent in one and able to follow the other is the practical expectation in most art and tech art positions.
