3D Animation

3D animation in games means movement that a player triggers: cycles, attacks, transitions and cinematics, authored so they can be blended and interrupted at any moment.

The constraint that defines game animation is interactivity. A run cycle has to loop, a swing has to be cancellable, and a transition has to work from whichever pose the character happens to be in. That pushes the craft towards clean keys, consistent timing and poses that read in a fraction of a second.

Much of the work happens around the animation itself: rigs, state machines, blend trees, root motion and the budget for how many clips a character can carry. Motion capture provides raw material for realistic projects, but it arrives needing cleanup and retargeting before it is usable.

Character Animation is the figure-focused part of this skill; Rigging builds the controls it depends on. 3D animation is the broader craft, and it is judged by how the movement feels in the hands of a player.
