Database Management

Database management in games covers the stores behind player accounts, progress, purchases and telemetry: schema design, queries, migrations and keeping it fast under load.

A live game writes constantly and reads more. The skill means designing a schema that survives the feature after next, writing queries that stay cheap as the table grows, and running migrations against data that cannot be taken offline. Relational systems appear alongside document and key-value stores, often in the same project for different jobs.

Operational work comes with it: backups that have actually been restored once, replication, index maintenance and investigating the query that got slow after a release. Where analytics are involved, the same skill has to serve large read-only workloads without disturbing the live service.

Backend Development builds the services around the data, and Cloud Services cover what runs where. Database work is the part that decides whether player progress is still there tomorrow, which is why it is rarely delegated to a framework alone.
