QA Manager

QA managers plan how a game gets tested, lead the test team and decide what a build has to pass before it ships.

QA management is planning and judgement rather than hands-on testing. The manager defines the test strategy for a project, splits it into passes and cycles, staffs them, and keeps the bug database in a state where severity and priority still mean something after several thousand entries.

Release work is a large part of it: certification requirements for consoles and stores, regression coverage for live updates, and the call on whether a known issue blocks a build or ships with a note. Automation and build pipelines reduce the manual load, so some of the role is deciding what is worth automating.

Where a QA tester finds and reproduces issues, the QA manager owns coverage, process and the quality bar, and reports on both to production.
