Game Director

The game director holds the creative vision of a title and decides what it is and is not.

A game director is accountable for the whole experience: the pillars a game is built on, the feel of its core loop, tone and content, and the hundreds of smaller decisions that either reinforce those pillars or quietly dissolve them. The work is mostly judgement and communication — reviewing builds, giving direction across design, art, audio and engineering, and saying no often enough that the shipped game still resembles the plan.

Postings expect shipped titles in senior creative roles, because the job rests on having seen how decisions play out years later, and they expect someone who can work with production and product leadership without surrendering the vision to a spreadsheet.

A lead game designer runs the design discipline and its craft; a creative director may hold vision across several titles or a brand. The game director owns one game, and in live titles keeps owning it while it keeps changing.
