Pixel Art

Pixel art is drawing at a deliberately low resolution, where every pixel is placed by hand and the palette is part of the design.

The constraint is the craft. A character has to read at a size where an eye is two pixels, so silhouette, contrast and colour choice do the work that detail would do elsewhere. Artists work with a fixed palette, control anti-aliasing by hand rather than letting a tool blur edges, and keep the pixel grid intact so that nothing drifts between frames.

Animation follows the same rule: sprites are built frame by frame, with timing and exaggeration carrying the weight, and a run cycle may live in a dozen frames. Production work adds the practical side - consistent sprite sizes, sheet packing, tilesets that connect in every direction, and icons that still read when the interface scales them down.

Jobs that ask for pixel art often ask for broader 2D work as well, since the same artist usually produces concepts, interface elements and promotional illustrations for the same game.
