Substance Painter

Substance Painter is used to texture game assets by painting PBR materials directly onto the mesh.

Substance Painter is the texturing step between a finished model and an asset in the engine. Artists bake mesh maps, layer smart materials, mask by curvature and ambient occlusion, add wear and surface story, then export map sets that match the target engine and shader.

The skill is less about the interface than about material judgement: how metal, worn paint, fabric and skin read under the lighting of the game, and how far a texture can carry detail the geometry does not have. Postings usually pair it with a modelling package, often Blender, Maya or 3ds Max, and with Substance Designer when procedural material authoring is part of the job.

Texture budgets, trim sheets and channel packing come with the territory, which is why the tool shows up in environment art, prop art, character art and tech art roles alike rather than in one discipline only.
