Tech Artist Character Animation w/m/d

Character Artist

Skills: Blueprints (Unreal Engine) Character Animation Game Design Motion Capture Programming Unreal Engine

Machine translation. The company's original is in German, and that version is the binding one.

We are looking for...

We are looking for a Tech Artist focused on character animation who implements our character systems in Unreal Engine reliably and integrates animations cleanly into existing game mechanics. You also support the general character art setup as well as the technical setup and maintenance of vehicles, so that they can be controlled correctly by the game.

Your tasks

You implement character animation systems in Unreal Engine and develop them further, for example on the basis of animation blueprints, state machines and blend spaces. You integrate new animations into existing gameplay mechanics, define the necessary hooks and events, and work closely with animation, design and engineering to optimise timing, responsiveness and readability.

Beyond that you support the character art setup and make sure setups are robust and reusable - including MetaHuman workflows.

Another part of the job is the vehicle setup: you set vehicles up technically and maintain them so that they can be moved reliably by our gameplay and physics systems, and you keep them consistent across different vehicles. You help debug complex state and setup problems, keep an eye on performance and maintainability, and help to standardise workflows and document best practices.

Your profile

  • You hold a completed degree in media informatics, game design or a comparable course of study with a good to very good grade.
  • Several years of experience as a Tech Artist, Technical Animator or in a comparable role
  • Good German and English, spoken and written
  • Experience with the import and setup pipeline: technical setup and maintenance of character assets from DCC to Unreal, including the motion capture workflow
  • Very good knowledge of the animation system in Unreal: solid experience with Unreal Engine character animation, in particular animation blueprints, state machines and blend spaces
  • Practical experience with motion capture: cleanup, editing, retargeting and building and maintaining animation libraries
  • Experience with MetaHumans, in particular optimisation
  • Experience with the technical setup and maintenance of vehicles
  • Experience with blueprints

Ideally you also have first experience in or with:

  • Scripting or programming to improve tools or pipelines
  • Motion matching / pose search, the Gameplay Ability System or complex locomotion frameworks
  • Camera systems / Sequencer
  • Unreal Animation Framework
