Environment Art

Environment art builds the places a game happens in: terrain, architecture, props and the composition that makes them readable.

An environment artist works from blockout to final dressing. The first pass is about layout and readability with the level designer, the later ones about materials, modular kits, lighting support and the set dressing that makes a place look lived in.

Performance is a constant companion. Draw calls, instancing, LODs and texture budgets decide how much of a scene can exist at once, which is why modular workflows and trim sheets are standard rather than a trick.

Tools are Unreal or Unity plus the usual modelling and texturing packages, often with procedural help from Houdini for terrain and scatter. World building as a skill reaches further, into how the space tells a story; environment art is the production side of the same question.
