Audio Engineering

Audio engineering in games covers recording, editing, mixing and mastering the material a project ships with, and getting it through the technical requirements of each platform.

The craft side is familiar from any studio: microphone choice and placement, signal chain, cleaning up takes, editing dialogue, balancing a mix and mastering to a target loudness. The game-specific part is what happens afterwards. Audio is not laid against a fixed timeline but triggered by events, so the material has to survive being cut short, layered with itself and played back on a phone speaker as well as a surround system.

Postings therefore ask for format and compression knowledge, voice chains for large dialogue sets, loudness standards for each platform, and a clean handover into middleware and the engine. Memory budgets and streaming limits decide sample rates and variation counts, and an engineer is expected to work within them instead of asking for more headroom.

Creating the sounds themselves is tagged as Sound Design; audio engineering is the capture, treatment and technical delivery around it.
