Sales Manager

Sales managers in games handle the business relationships behind distribution: platforms, retail partners, licensing and B2B deals.

The work is partner-facing. Depending on the company that means negotiating placement and promotions with digital stores, handling retail and distribution partners, selling services to other studios, or licensing technology and IP.

Day to day it consists of pipeline and forecast, contract negotiation, and the coordination with marketing and production that makes a commitment deliverable. Knowing how the industry works — release windows, platform cuts, how a publisher thinks — is what separates this from sales anywhere else.

At a service company the role sells to studios; at a developer or publisher it sells through platforms and retail. Business development is the neighbouring title and usually means opening new partnerships rather than running existing ones. The job also carries the forecast, so a deal that looks good in a meeting still has to survive the numbers it was promised on.
