Engine Programmer

Engine Programmer jobs are about the layer under the game: rendering, memory, frame time, build pipelines and the tools the rest of the team works with.

The postings in this list are rarely about gameplay features. They ask for rendering and shader work, profiling against a frame-time budget, memory and threading, and the core systems a title is built on. C++ is the common language. Rust and Godot appear where studios work on their own technology instead of a licensed engine.

Two kinds of employer hire for this. One builds and maintains an engine of its own, including the simulation and the build pipeline around it. The other licenses Unreal or Unity and needs someone who can read the engine source, extend it, and fix the performance problems a large project runs into.

Tools programming and continuous integration sit next to the rendering requirements for a reason. An engine programmer's work is measured by what the rest of the team can do with it. Locations in this list include Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin and Bremen.
