Gameplay Scripting

Gameplay scripting is writing the behaviour of quests, encounters and abilities in a game's scripting layer, close to the design rather than to the engine.

Most productions keep a layer above the engine code where content is wired up: a visual graph, an embedded language or an in-house system. That is where a quest checks its conditions and hands out its reward, where a boss switches phases, where an ability applies its effect and plays its cue, and where a door finally opens. The work is logic, but it is written against designed content and iterated on daily.

What a posting expects is a mix of two habits. One is programming discipline - readable structure, handling the case where the player does something out of order, and not leaving a save file in a state nobody can recover from. The other is a designer's judgement about timing, feedback and whether the thing is any fun once it runs.

Engine and systems code is advertised as gameplay programming; this tag is for the scripted layer on top of it.
