Crossplay Games
Crossplay games let players on different platforms play together, which turns accounts, matchmaking, build parity and certification into one shared problem.
A posting that names crossplay is usually about the plumbing behind it. Players need an account identity that works outside any single storefront, matchmaking has to pool platforms without making a match unfair, and the netcode must tolerate clients with different frame rates, input devices and patch levels. Every platform holder adds its own rules about what may be shared, what has to be opt-in and how other players may be reported.
It also multiplies the test matrix. A feature is not done when it works on one target; it has to be verified in every combination of platforms that can meet in a session, including the case where one side is a version behind. QA, release engineering and live operations feel this more than anyone, which is why the tag turns up on their postings as often as on engineering ones.
Server-backed play in general is tagged as Online Games; crossplay is the part that spans platform boundaries.
