Solutions Engineer

A solutions engineer helps other developers get a platform, engine or service working in their own project, which means debugging code that is not theirs.

The role sits on the supplier side of a technical relationship. A studio integrates an SDK, a payment system, a console toolchain or a middleware component and runs into something that does not behave as documented. The solutions engineer reproduces the case, finds whether the fault is in the integration or the product, and carries the latter back to the team that owns the code.

That makes the job half engineering and half communication. Reading someone else's build logs, writing a sample that demonstrates the correct usage, and improving the documentation that would have prevented the ticket are all part of it. Programming skill is required, and so is the patience to work on a problem defined by a customer's deadline.

A Tools Programmer builds software for colleagues inside the same company. The solutions engineer does the equivalent across a company boundary, for partners who are free to walk away.
